Tomato Urban Retreat is a sustainable urban hostel with two locations in Italy: Turin, in San Salvario, since 2011; Rome, in the Monti district, from June 2026. Private rooms and dorms, a café, a shared kitchen, a 24-hour laundry and workspaces included in your stay.
Twenty-one rooms, all with a private bathroom, and shared spaces opening onto a garden, in the most multicultural neighbourhood in the city. Inside: a café and cake shop, a meeting room, a coworking area, bike storage, table tennis. Keyless entry 24 hours a day, reception from 8:00 to 20:00.
A short walk from Termini, fifteen minutes from the Colosseum
Forty-six rooms and generous shared spaces opening onto an inner garden. The building is gas-free: eight heat pumps, solar thermal and photovoltaic with storage, mechanical ventilation in every room. Shared kitchen and laundry always open, reception from 8:00 to 24:00.
Both locations have workspaces designed for people staying a few days or a few weeks: fast Wi-Fi, desks, a meeting room. Plus the two things that really make the difference between three nights and three weeks — a laundry open 24 hours and a shared kitchen always available — which almost no workspace offers.
In Turin the coworking space is open to non-guests too, at 5 € a day; in Rome it is for guests only for now.
Certified green energy in Turin, a gas-free building in Rome, tap water in both.
Private rooms and dorms
For people travelling alone, as a couple, with friends or with family.
Kitchen and laundry 24/7
Open at any hour, without having to ask anyone.
In-house café
Italian breakfast and home-made cakes.
Real neighbourhoods
San Salvario and Monti — not places you just pass through.
Local artists

Our guides
Museums, markets, walks and things to do: everything we think is genuinely worth your time in each of the two cities. Written by people who live there, not copied from a guidebook.
Porta Palazzo Market
The largest open-air market in Europe, where you breathe the multi-ethnic atmosphere of the city.
Monte dei Cappuccini
One of the most spectacular views over Turin, with the river and the Alps behind it.
Monti district
Alleys, workshops and taverns a short walk from the Forums, away from the tourist circuit.
Basilica of San Clemente
Three levels stacked on top of each other, from the twentieth century down to a Roman mithraeum, ten minutes on foot.
“Great place in a great location. San Salvario is the perfect neighbourhood to experience the real Turin. The staff speak excellent English and gave us great tips on where to eat.”
“I had booked a mixed dorm and the girl at reception told me she had put me in a part of the room with other girls — a thoughtful touch. And when you arrive the towels are already on the bed, at no extra charge.”

“Came for work, came back for pleasure. The coworking space is comfortable and quiet, and the bar is the right place to meet other travellers. Excellent value for money.”
“Lovely place, staff welcoming and helpful. Myself and 3 siblings stayed — perfectly placed next to the train station and great food spots. Immaculately clean, cannot recommend enough.”
— Constance, Wales · Tomato Roma · Hostelworld, August 2026
“Well looked after and genuinely sustainable, you can see the care in every detail. Very comfortable mattresses, a lovely garden, honest breakfast. A hostel with a soul.”
“The structure is cozy, clean, green and strategically located because convenient to visit the beautiful city. The staff is really nice, helpful and ready to answer competently.”
