Museums, markets, walks and things to do: everything we think is genuinely unmissable on a visit to Turin.

Porta Palazzo Market

The largest open-air market in Europe: half an hour on foot or tram 4. Mon–Fri until 2 p.m., Saturday until 7, with the Balôn flea market next door.

Monte dei Cappuccini

The best view of Turin, the Po below and the Alps behind. A ten-minute climb through the woods from piazza Gran Madre. Church and terrace are free.

Cinema Museum

Inside the Mole, via Montebello 20, twenty minutes: you spiral up the ramp. Closed Tuesdays. €18, plus €9 for the panoramic lift.

Parco del Valentino

Fifty-five hectares on the Po, Turin’s oldest public park, ten minutes away. Always open and free, with the 1729 Botanical Garden.

Bunker

Twenty-five thousand square metres in a former factory: concerts, dj sets, padel. Too far to walk and open by calendar: check variantebunker.com.

RESTAURANTS NEARBY

The neighbourhood around Tomato Urban Retreat is the heart of Turin nightlife: San Salvario has some of the best restaurants in the city, from Piedmontese cooking to Neapolitan pizza.

Pescheria Gallina

Fresh fish seventy metres away, on via Baretti: every dish is €17, wine and focaccia included. No bookings, you queue. Closed Mondays.

Mollica

Sandwiches with small-producer ingredients and Piedmontese sauces, on the market three minutes away. A Gambero Rosso street-food champion.

UAO Pizza

Neapolitan pizza at via Berthollet 17/B, three minutes: served in the box, the speciality is the folded portafoglio. Open every day.

Savurè

Pasta shop with a kitchen at via Madama Cristina 12: pick shape and sauce. Half price in the last hour. Dinner only Wed–Sat.

Napples

Cartwheel-sized Neapolitan pizza and fried snacks at via Sant’Anselmo 36, three minutes. Dinner only from 7. Gluten-free pizza too.

Osteria Antiche Sere

A 1990 piola run by the Rota family, a Slow Food Snail. In Borgo San Paolo: metro to Racconigi. Dinner only, closed Sundays, book ahead.

And at night, you come home

We know these places because we go to them: nearly all of them are a fifteen-minute walk from us. Tomato is at Via Silvio Pellico 11, right in the middle of San Salvario — private rooms and dorms, a café, a shared kitchen and coworking, and someone at the desk who can tell you where to go tonight.

APERITIVO AND NIGHTLIFE

From Nebbiolo to cocktails, from vermouth to pastis, the Turin aperitivo is not to be missed: by the river, outdoors or in a welcoming bar.

Lo Sbarco

On our own street, at number 5: one minute. Tables outside in good weather, jazz playing, low prices and simple cooking in the evening too.

Gørilla

Cocktail bar since 2016 at via Galliari 20/F, three minutes: proper drinks and a creative kitchen. Daily 6 p.m.–2 a.m., until 3 Fri and Sat.

Camping Bar

Via Sant’Anselmo 34/b, three minutes: tapas, burgers and cocktails from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Quiz, karaoke and dj sets at the weekend.

Bicierin Ciclofficina

A bike workshop and a bistro in one, via Principe Tommaso 26/G: aperitivo with Edit craft beer, and bikes for hire. Mon–Sat 10 a.m.–midnight.

Imbarchino

In Parco del Valentino, on the bank of the Po, a good fifteen minutes. Reopened in 2019 through crowdfunding, now run by local associations.

BREAKFAST & SNACKS

For slow days, the city is full of cafés where you can linger over a long breakfast or an afternoon snack with friends. Some also welcome remote workers, with a real Italian coffee to keep you going.

Siciloso

Sicilian bakery and rotisserie at via Madama Cristina 19, three minutes: arancini, cannoli, cassata. Open on Sundays too.

Tauer Bakery

British-style baking at via Madama Cristina 22, three minutes: cupcakes, cookies, scones. Over two thirds is vegan. Closed Mondays.

Teapot

On our own street, at 18: teas, home-made cakes, seasonal dishes and Sunday brunch. Tables outside, wi-fi, dogs welcome. Open every day.

Orso Laboratorio Caffè

Specialty coffee at via Berthollet 30/G, two minutes: single origins and alternative brewing. Open daily, an espresso costs €1.50.

Breakfast at Sara’s

Entirely plant-based baking at via Saluzzo 23/E, opened by Sara Piva in 2020. Closed Monday and Tuesday, and mornings only.

ICE CREAM & CHOCOLATE

The chocolate city: no visit to Turin is complete without tasting gianduiotti or a hot chocolate — or, in summer, a good artisan gelato instead, or alongside.

Mara dei Boschi

Gelato at via Berthollet 30/H, two minutes: three cones from Gambero Rosso and a coeliac-certified workshop.

Guido Castagna

The Giaveno chocolatier’s only shop in Turin, via Maria Vittoria 27/C: bean to bar, and the seven-gram Giuinott®. Closed Mondays.

Casa Marchetti

Alberto Marchetti’s gelato house on piazza C.L.N. 248: open workshop and classes. For just a cone, the nearest one is on corso Vittorio Emanuele II.

Guido Gobino

Via Lagrange 1/A, ten minutes: the only one of the three Turin shops open at the weekend. The Tourinot® and the Cremino al Sale were born here.

Baratti & Milano

A historic café under the arcades of piazza Castello, second entrance in the Galleria Subalpina. The cremino was invented here in 1858. Closed Mondays.

HISTORIC SHOPS

Shops open for generations that still sell one thing, done properly. One of them is forty metres from us.

Lait e Formagg

Via Madama Cristina 18/C, forty metres away: a dairy shop since 1956, now cheese. They fetch the Valchiusella toma from the alpine pasture themselves.

Libreria Luxemburg

Via Cesare Battisti 11, in the Galleria Subalpina: a bookshop since 1872, now with a café inside. Foreign papers and magazines.

Il Cappellaio Matto

Piazza Carlo Felice 9, under the arcades: hats made to measure since 1857, with a history that runs through Borsalino.

Torino Penna

Via XX Settembre 4: since 1961 they sell nothing but pens. You test the nib on paper before buying. Closed Sunday.

Drogheria Rinaldi

Piazza Emanuele Filiberto 2, Porta Palazzo: a grocer’s since 1890, fifth generation. Loose spices and teas, Marseille soap.

GIFTS & SOUVENIRS

Made by hand around here, not in souvenir shops. All six are walkable from us.

Libreria Trebisonda

Via Sant’Anselmo 22/L, on the corner of our street: a bookshop since 2011, shelves arranged by region of the world. Mondays it opens at 15.30.

La Marchigiana

Via Saluzzo 33/C, three minutes: shoes and bags sewn in the Marche from leftover stock leather. Tuesday to Saturday, 11-13.30 and 15.30-19.

Sassi

Via Berthollet 25/C: an atelier since 2017, spare womenswear inspired by plants, made to measure or off the rail. Tue-Sat 15.30-18.30.

Bruno shoemaker

Via Ormea 14, five minutes: handmade leather shoes, made to measure, or your old ones brought back. Better to call, 349 1859468.

Piccolo Laboratorio Orafo

Via Berthollet 18/B: two goldsmiths sharing one bench. Rings and earrings cast on the spot. Tuesday to Saturday, afternoons 15-19.

San Salvario Emporium

Piazza Madama Cristina, the first Sunday of the month: craft, illustration and independent publishing. Since 2013, right on our doorstep.

CRAFT AROUND THE CITY

Workshops where you can watch the work happen. A few tram stops away, worth the trip.

Born in Berlin

Via San Dalmazzo 9a: since 2005 two people have designed and sewn their clothes here. Workshop and shop in the same room.

IL Independent Label

Via Mazzini 39, in a courtyard: a tailoring studio cutting spare pieces from leftover fabric. Ring the bell if the door is shut. Mon-Fri 10-19.

Creativity Oggetti

Via Carlo Alberto 40/f: since 2001 a gallery of jewellery and objects by named makers. Closed Sunday, Monday opens at 15.

Jamais Sans Toi

Via Catania 17/b: two sisters cast ceramic and metal jewellery by the lost-wax method. Thursday and Friday open until 19.

16. Concept Store

Via Catania 16, Elena Pignata’s shop: handmade objects chosen one by one. Wednesday to Saturday, 11-19.

Trakatan

Via Mantova 9: bags in vegetable-tanned leather, in short runs, in the workshop of a 1942 leather company. 011 8172727.

SOCIAL PROJECTS

Co-ops, neighbourhood houses and reclaimed public spaces: places where you eat well and the neighbourhood gains something too.

Casa del Quartiere

Via Morgari 14, five minutes: in the old public baths, since 2010. Inside, Qucina — café and restaurant — and a hundred and sixty associations.

Orti Generali

Strada Castello di Mirafiori 38/15: twelve hectares and a hundred and seventy allotments, with a vegetarian kiosk. Open evenings from May.

MagazziniOz

Via Giolitti 19/A: restaurant and shop where people with disabilities and refugees work. Lunch only, Monday to Thursday.

Osteria Andirivieni

Via Rubino 43/A, inside Cascina Roccafranca: osteria run by the Raggio co-op, work placement. Listed in Osterie d’Italia 2026.

Casa nel Parco

Via Panetti 1, in Parco Colonnetti: neighbourhood house in Mirafiori. La Locanda does slow-risen pizza, Tuesday to Sunday.

48 HOURS IN TURIN

If you only have a weekend: how we would spend it, keeping almost everything within a quarter of an hour on foot.

The first afternoon

Drop your bags and walk the block: via Berthollet, via Saluzzo, the market in piazza Madama Cristina. Coffee at Orso, two minutes away.

The first evening

Aperitivo at Gørilla or Lo Sbarco, which is on our own street. Dinner round the corner: Pescheria Gallina, or folded pizza at UAO.

Saturday morning

Breakfast at Tauer, then Porta Palazzo before 2pm: on Saturdays the Balôn is on too. On the way back, stop at Drogheria Rinaldi.

Saturday afternoon

The Mole and the Cinema Museum, then down to the Valentino for sunset. Aperitivo at the Imbarchino by the river, dinner at Savurè.

The last morning

Climb Monte dei Cappuccini for the view of the Alps, ten minutes through the woods. Ice cream at Mara dei Boschi before your train.
