A gas-free hostel in Monti
Heat pumps, sun on the roof and water on tap. And a social cooperative running it.
Tomato Urban Retreat Ostello della gioventù is at Via Cesare Balbo 4, in the Monti district. The building was renovated to run without gas: here are the choices we made, one by one.
Energy
- Eight high-efficiency heat pumps, no gas boiler
- Solar thermal and photovoltaic with storage
- Thermal and acoustic insulation in every room
- Mechanical ventilation: the air stays clean and filtered
Water and waste
- Tap water on draught instead of plastic bottles: bring your own bottle
- Flow reducers on every tap
- Separate waste collection throughout the house
Who runs it
The hostel is run by Social Supply, a third-sector social cooperative. We are a youth hostel, which is why the Rome city tax does not apply. Our Rome guide has a section on the social projects in the neighbourhood.
What we don’t claim
We hold no environmental certification such as the EU Ecolabel. What you find on this page are the choices made in the building and in how we run it, not a label.
